Menstruation poverty in Polish refugee camps
2023-06-20 13:42:46
Menstrual poverty is on the rise among displaced women who have been forced to live outside of their home countries as a result of war and economic poverty experience even worse menstrual health conditions. In a report by UNICEF (2019), displaced women face various challenging hygienic conditions while living in the camps due to lack of adequate and accessible facilities that support menstrual hygiene for women and young girls. As reported by Concern Worldwide (2018), Syrian refugee women living in Lebanon often prioritise their demand for basic human needs such as food and shelter because they considered these issues as the means of survival while living the camps and as result, menstrual hygiene is not valued as the main issue they need at the time of stay in the host country. In addition, menstrual hygiene in these camps is often unattainable due to long lines to the toilet, no privacy to the toilet doors as they are usually without locks, and unhygienic toilet-water shortages and experienced sexual and gender-based violence.
Menstrual health and hygiene management should be treated as a social -economic problem with the implication for sustainable health and environment action. Pilot study by Dr, Omoye Akhagba aims to find out the living conditions of refugees in the Polish camps and how they maintain their menstrual hygiene while these camps.

Society, wetlands, turtles and biodiversity | Civitas on Air & EMYS-R #1
2023-06-05 15:47:15
"When you’re going on the street and ask people: “What do you think about wetlands?”, people would say: “No, that’s too risky, that’s dirty. I don’t want to get sick!” – says in the podcast Dr. Jean-Yves Georges, a biologist and ecologist from Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC), who is the leader of the international EMYS-R project. Is this a true picture of wetlands? Why do we need to protect them? Why is social science so important in studying and solving environmental problems? We invite you to listen to this special episode in our Civitas on Air series! The EMYS-R project is a 3-year international research project focused on participatory activities in the field of nature protection, based on the most important theories in the field of humanities, social and natural sciences. The aim of the project is to test the hypothesis that a higher degree of wetland restoration can compensate for the limited capacity of the captive Emys orbicularis pond turtle to settle in the wild, and to answer the question of how such conservation measures can benefit society by bringing people closer together and the nature. The project website: https://emysr.cnrs.fr/project/summary/ Emys-R is funded through the 2020-2021 Biodiversa & Water JPI joint call for research proposals, under the BiodivRestore ERA-Net COFUND programme, and with the funding organisations Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR, France), Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF, Germany), State Education Development Agency (VIAA, Latvia), and National Science Center (NSC, Poland).
The future of Europe: breakdown or breakthrough? | Civitas on Air & DEBUE #2
2023-02-14 12:33:01
Once again, Europe is at a crossroads. Russia's war on Ukraine has revealed the EU's unique characteristics as a hybrid power and has prompted a high level of solidarity amongst EU states vis a vis Ukraine. At the same time, the war reveals the limits to the EU's hard power and raises questions about its relevance. In this podcast, Collegium Civitas students: Filip Gałązka, Tumarbike Bekitova, and Prince Wori debate the future of European integration and tackle fundamental questions to do with enlargement, migration, conflict, and external relations.
This podcast was produced in @CollegiumCivitasCC as part of the DEBUE project: "Debating Europe: Internal and External Dynamics of European Integration." The project is co-funded by the European Union under Jean Monnet Programme.

2023-02-03 15:48:42
Sustainability education: when and how to start? | Civitas on Air & PASSION #2
2022-11-09 13:47:20
In this episode, we look at the issue of sustainable education based on the experiences of PASSION team members from Portugal and Sweden.
Should we teach sustainability in preschools (or is it too early)? Is it possible to teach about sustainability during online classes? Why is it worth using case-based teaching? Is people’s connectedness with nature similar in Portugal and Sweden?
Prof. Clara Vasconcelos (Portugal) suggests that if we start teaching sustainability children, they will bring smart and useful ideas to their families. Grzegorz Mikusiński, Ph.D. (Sweden), adds that we can learn a lot from children about sustainability.
Prof. Clara Vasconcelos is a Professor at the Department of Geosciences, Environment and Spatial Landing in the Faculty of Sciences of Porto University and a team member of the PASSION project.
Grzegorz Mikusiński, Ph.D., is a lecturer and researcher from the Department of Ecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and a team member of the PASSION project.

What are social innovations? | Civitas on Air & PASSION #1
2022-11-09 13:44:02
What defines social innovation? Who can become a social innovator? How many social innovation initiatives are in the UK? How should we shape future social innovators? Why is social innovation not something we can teach in a classroom? Can innovative behaviours impact people’s environmental actions?
According to Prof. Richard Hazenberg, social innovation is how we develop new products, processes, or services in society, which have to be aimed at supporting the disadvantaged and trying to come up with new solutions to existing social problems: education, puberty, etc. We have so many social issues around the world that we need to fix; in some ways, our societal structures are broken, and social innovations are those things that come in and help us to change or improve those social structures.
Prof. Richard Hazenberg is a director and research leader of the Institute of Social Innovation and Impact at the University of Northampton and a team member of the PASSION project.
